Chris Leiper - Director of Bands

Mr. Leiper is a graduate of the University of South Florida where he received his BS in Music Education in 2017. Before coming to SHS, he served as the Director of Bands at Pinellas Park HS in Largo, FL.  Mr. Leiper has also worked as the visual coordinator for Booker HS, a brass instructor for the nationally recognized Newsome HS from Lithia, FL, and is a charter staff member for the 2 time WGI Silver Medalist, Horizon Winds. As a performer, Mr. Leiper has played with the Troopers Drum and Bugle Corps from Casper, WY, the Sun Devils Drum and Bugle Corps from Orlando, FL, and currently serves as the Principal Trumpet for the Pops Orchestra of Sarasota and Bradenton. This will be Mr. Leiper's 2nd year at Sarasota High School.

Pat Miller - Assistant Director of Bands

Pat Miller has been involved in the world of the pageantry arts for over 25 years as an educator, designer, adjudicator, clinician and consultant.  Originally starting his career as a performer with the Garfield Cadets, Pat has served in many roles including drill designer, visual caption head, instructor and consultant for several DCI, BOA, and scholastic championship programs.  Pat’s involvement has included such outstanding DCI organizations as The Cadets, The Glassmen, The Blue Knights, and most recently with The Phantom Regiment.  Scholastically, Pat has been instrumental in achieving multiple state championships in Virginia and Florida, and has been involved with Lassiter High School (GA), Center Grove High School (IN), Plymouth Canton (MI), Thomas Jefferson HS of Science and Technology (VA), and has been working with the Braden River High School Marching Band, the two-time class 3A Florida State Champion since the 2012 season.

Pat is an active adjudicator throughout the Southeast and MidWest and has been a Guest Conductor at the University of Georgia Middle School Honor Band Festival in Athens, GA.   He recently completed his eleventh year as the Director of Bands at The Out-of-Door Academy, a Pre K-12 independent college preparatory school in Sarasota, FL.  Pat enjoys spending time with his wife and two daughters at the beach and running Tough Mudder extreme endurance races.

Chuck Alfrey - Director of Inst. Studies

Mr. Alfrey has been a music educator since 1988.  He has been the Director of Bands at various schools in Indiana and Florida.  His groups have won multiple State Championships in winter percussion and winter guard as well as being WGI Finalist and Semi-Finalist.  Marching bands under Mr. Alfrey's direction have consistently advanced to Circuit Championship finals.  He has also been a drill designer, music arranger, consultant, and adjudicator for the past 28 years.

As a performer Mr. Alfrey has played with such jazz greats as James Moody, Conte Candoli, Bill Watrous, Ray Brown and John Faddis.  He lists John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins and Michael Brecker as his major influences as a tenor sax player.

Mr. Alfrey enjoys playing golf, running, and participating in trialthlons.  Completing full Ironman competitions in Louisville and Chattanooga are listed as highlights of his triatlon career.

This is Mr. Alfrey's 6th year at Sarasota HS.
